In the last chapter, Craig had Alfie "taken away" because he came up lame in a race and would never be able to run competitatively again. Craig has always said that the greyhounds are not pets; they are working dogs. Becky was horrified when she saw what actually happened to Alfie and all the previous dogs that could no longer run.
1. I'm going to ask you to do something hard! Defend Craig's position: what possible reasons could Craig have for
- not allowing the dogs in the house
- not allowing Becky or anyone coddle the dogs
- not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race
2. What alternatives could Craig have chosen for his dogs, once they can no longer run?

Craig could not allow the dogs in the house because they aren’t trained to be in a house, he could not allow Becky or anyone to coddle the dogs because that would make them used to not being in a high pressure environment and he doesn’t allow keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race because he thinks dogs are just racing machines, not pets.

ReplyDeleteNot allowing Becky or anyone to coddle the dogs, the dogs would get used to it and if something happened to Becky for example, they might worry more about Becky then actually winning a race.
Not keeping the dogs around after they are no longer able to race, the dogs would have to use one of the kennels and that is one less kennel for a dog that can race.

For Craig it’s almost like a business so he needs to make money. It takes money to look after the dogs and provide for the family so dogs that aren’t providing him money aren’t useful so they are given away. Dogs that aren’t making him money are also extra money to take care of them.
2.Craig could’ve given the dogs to a shelter to get adopted, given them to homes that are looking for pets or if he absolutely had to at least humanely put them down.

Craig doesn’t really care for the dogs; all he wants is money so he just uses the dogs to make money. He doesn’t keep the dogs because he doesn’t want to spend money for the food and other things the dogs need, he uses the money for himself.
2. He could have sold the dogs to people so after racing the dogs could be cared for as pets, he would have benefited from that too since he would be selling them.

I think that Craig wouldn’t let the dogs inside the house because he does not wont Becky to start loving the dogs even more then she does now, because he knows that one day the dogs will go into a race and fail to succeed to win and all of the presser would be on him to let Becky keep the dog or dogs.
