The Giver: How DOES it end?

Re-read pp 174 to 179 on etext The Giver or, if you have a book, read pages 177-180.

The ending of the The Giver may be interpreted in two very different ways.

1)Perhaps Jonas is remembering his Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful that the Giver transmitted to him - as he and Gabriel are freezing to death, falling into hypothermia and hallucinating in the snow.

Or

2)Perhaps Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him.  Lois Lowry mentioned both possibilities but would not choose one as correct.

Choose the ending that you believe, and tell in your own words what happened.
  1. Which interpretation do you think is correct?
  2. Find 3 pieces of EVIDENCE from the book to support your interpretation of what happened from the last chapter. Give page numbers.  (You can paraphrase).
  3. Include a quote straight from the book as PART of your evidence.  Give the page number of the quote.
  4. What will happen to The Giver? The Community? Jonas and Gabriel now?
  5. What fun memories do you intend to make for yourself before you are "released"?
Do this is MS WORD.  Use WORD TALK to proof read your answer BEFORE you post it.

  1. 1. I think he lived and they made it to elsewhere.
    2. On page 175 he said “he felt certain that his destination lay ahead of him.” And on page 176 he was talking to Gabe about snow. And last on page 179 Jonas was hugging Gabe.
    4. If all the memories come back to the community the giver will have to help them so Jonas and Gabe made it to elsewhere and wormed up.
    5. I would like to make a memory of family and laughter.

  2. I think Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him.
P 179-180 “Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing.”
”He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.”
“Inside his freezing body, his heart surged with hope.
    They started down.”
I think the giver will die to be with his daughter Rosemary, the community will go in to chaos and Jonas and Gabriel will live with the people from the Christmas memory.
I want to make the memories of zip lining at wildplay and meeting one of my favorite youtubers before I am “released.”

  3. I think that the first quote is the right one.
    2. My three pieces are that Jonas sees light, he has memory of his life and he hears echoes.
    3. The quote that backs me up is “But somewhere ahead, there was warmth and light.”
4.I think that the Giver will try and help the community, the community will be going crazy and Gabriel and Jonas will Rest In Peace.
5.One of the memories I want to make before I am released will be, living in Vegas, winning the lottery and playing in the NHL.

  4. I think number two is correct because in my mind he sees people greeting him and Gabriel at the warm house. The snow swirled, blurring his vision. But somewhere ahead, through the blinding storm, he knew there was warmth and light (pg 179), Jonas found the sled that was wait¬ing for them at the top of the hill (pg 179) and could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where fam¬ilies created and kept memories, where they celebrated love. (pg 179) the giver will take of the community when they get the memories, and Jonas and Gabriel will be living with the people in the house. When I get “released” I want to remember the me traveling the world.

  5. Jonas does hear music and, with his special vision, is able to perceive the warm house where people are waiting to greet him. This is the theory I believe in but I also have second thoughts because I know that in the book it has evidence. My quote for my theory is “for the first time he heard something that he knew had to be music. He head people singing.” p180 My three pieces of evidence are: 1if only the Giver could of given me more warmth- he has warmth so we know that he can still live.2 but he began suddenly, to feel happy-if he is happy maybe he is not dead.3this was something he could keep, it was a memory of his own-this I think is the quote that will help me the most with my theory it shows that he is still alive. I think that the giver will help the community to realize that their life does not have to be planned for them. Then I think that the elders will have to flee because the community will be free and they will have all the memories to share. I think that Jonas and Gabriel will find a loving home with grandparents and then maybe the grandparents will actually be Jonas’s grandparents. If I was about to be released and I could do three things before I was then I would think about the time I went to Disneyland with my family and I would think about my birthday. - Jaden

  6. 1.I think that the second interpretation is correct.
2.On page 176 Jonas thinks for a moment that it would be easy to lie down beside his bike and slip into the warmth of sleep but then he thinks of how far he has come and how he must try to go on and he keeps walking so he does not die. He also calls back memories of warmth and those restore his will to survive and he keeps going on page 177.
3.On page 177 Jonas feels that “Warming himself ever so briefly had shaken away the lethargy and resignation and restored his will to survive.”
4.The giver will help the community deal with the memories then be released and be with Rosemary when the community can handle it. I think the community will gain wisdom and make changes. Jonas and Gabriel will be accepted into their new community and settle there until they are released.
5.Before I am released I want have memories with family and friends and memories of love and happiness.

  7. 1. I think Jonas is remembering the Christmas memory because that was the Givers favorite memory and Jonas didn’t want to leave the Giver so he was remembering that memory before him and Gabe died. He also is probley thinking about Christmas because there’s snow and music.
    2. I think the Giver dies and everyone in the community goes crazy.
I would like to eat pink popcorn before I got released.

  8. I don’t think he died I think he lived. He said that he heard some music and he heard some people singing and he could see some lights in front of him. Page 179 to 180. He saw some shining lights through the windows of the room, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights. Page 179. The giver will have to help all the people in the community. Because they don’t know how to control all the feelings. I think that Jonas and Gabriel found elsewhere and they are happy there. Playing with all my friends and having a lot of fun.

    2. On page 176, Jonas says that it would be easy to lie down beside his bike and slip
into the warmth of sleep. He also calls back memories of warmth and those restore
his will to survive and he keeps going, Page177.
    3. Page 177 Jonas feels that “Warming himself so briefly had shaken away lethargy and resignation and restored his will to survive.”
    4. The giver will help the community with the memories then will be released and I think after awhile the community would be able to handle situations by themselves.
I think Jonas and Gabe get accepted into a new community.
    5. Fun memories I would want would be time with family and holidays, especially Christmas.

    3. He thought he heard music. Page 180.
    4. I think the giver will keep his job and help the community when Jonas’s memories come back. I think Gabe and Jonas will find “elsewhere”.

    5. I would want to make memories with my family with my family and friends.

  13. I think the correct one is correct. In the book it says he forced his eyes open and so the lights on page 179. The giver and The Community Jonas and Gabriel will get all the memories Jonas had in the first place. I would go on a sled and ride down a hill and I would go to the lake and swim. I would also go to a party.
